Did you know 4.0

Just watched the video Did you know 4.0
All I have to say is HOLY SMOKES!
I feel like I have always known the statistics shown in the video but having them put down and listed out like that just really put it all in prospective.
Its crazy to even think that my niece who is 8 has a sell phone and texts be all the time and I didnt have a sell phone until I was in highschool in which that was only because I had a car so if I broke down I could call someone.
There are so many examples you can use to explain our dependance on technology such as the need for even your young children to have a cell phone to freaking out about your friends post on facebook because your read it out of context.
Even the way we share our life stories through technology now makes me wonder how much further it can go. I mean 5 years ago I couldnt have imagined heading to my facebook after a long day and telling a list of people I may know well or only have just met once about my entire day.

To think just how far technology has gone so far, so fast makes me sure wonder how things will change in my lifetime!

  1. I agree Sasha- technology certainly is progressing very quickly. I have a cousin that begged until she was 10 to get a cell phone, and my aunt and uncle finally broke down and got her one. Unfortunately, I don't know if I think that's a good thing because social media like Facebook and texting create social problems and bullying/making fun that would probably not occur in face to face situations. It seems like kids dont mind typing mean and cruel things (that they don't actually have to say) which I think is a challenge we're going to need to face while teaching- the increased social tensions in the classroom

  2. Being technology dependent is kind of like the point we discussed in our Psych class on Friday where we are starting to unload information into our cell phones and forget phone numbers and things like that because the computer does it for us. Its a scary thought how much trust we put into technology isn't it?

  3. Man I didn't have a cell phone till I was in high school either. It's interesting to see how people are beginning to rebel against technology. More, now than ever, I'm seeing young people simply "disconnecting". Unplugging from facebook and the internet, and even leaving their phones behind, even if only for a weekend. I think this is something we should look to try to do, lest we lose ourselves to technology completely.

I think and important part of many man vs machine films (the matrix, terminator etc) is that we become too dependent upon technology and essentially forget what it means to be human because of this. This is something that's always in the back of my mind, even if it's completely out there thinking!
